TO SELECTED INDIVIDUALS: CAVEAT! This critique should be read in its entirety
before forming any opinions; it is very controversial, but potentially
rewarding and enlightening, PERHAPS! ENJOY! lebeau

ELEGANCE UPON THE EARTH
{{Ecletic observations of Ross Hamilton's 2001 book, THE MYSTERY OF THE
SERPENT MOUND, published by Frog, Ltd., Berkeley, CA 94712.}}
This is not so much a book, but rather an intriguing pictorial exploration
of our ancient past, embossed in earth, and encompassing, if the author is
correct in his musings, the elegant conjoining of sacred geometry, astronomy,
philosophy and the rudiments of higher spirituality ~ all "UNIQUELY" stamped
upon a field in the southern part of Ohio. If the cited F.W. Putnam (19th
century archeologist with the 'heart of an adventurer and the soul of a poet')
is correct in his analysis of the self-same SERPENT MOUND, it may be upwards
of 5000 years old.
This age factor is of the utmost importance, since if it proves to be
accurate, it would show that the sophisticated sacred geometry would PREDATE
those who have been considered responsible for the same elegant ideas ~ like ~
the famous Pythagoras and his classic theorm: A SQUARED + B SQUARED = C
SQUARED, which every school boy and girl should be familiar with....
NO ONE KNOWS who built the SERPENT MOUND [[although I will speculate on this
at the end of these eclectic observations]] but the author explores many &
sundry sophisticated concepts of this MOUND, by scrutinizing the mathematical
details of this 'SNAKE IN THE GRASS'.
THE BARE FACTS
As mentioned before, becasue of Putnam's observations of soil depth within the
SERPENT MOUND, an age of approximately 5000 years could be extrapolated. (p.7
of Hamilton's book) [[This possible age dating may also give us a CLUE as to
who may have been responsible for its engineering and execution. As the text
related in no uncertain terms ~ IT 'TWAS NOT THE INDIANS of NORHT AMERICA!]]
On average, the SERPENT is about 20 feet wide on its undulating body, with the
head and helix a bit more that 80 feet wide, and the GREAT OVAL (in front of
the head) 124' by 64'. If the serpent is outstretched, the total length of
the three features would be 1370 feet, including the SMALL TRIANGLE feature
(in front of the OVAL and at the west end of the entire site in Ohio.)
AMAZING OBSERVATIONS
When you read this beautifully illustrated book, you will immediately notice
from these illustrations, that the SERPENT encompasses both the Sun & Moon
observations (similar to Stonehenge) featuring, but not limited to Summer
Solstice sunset (through the mouth of the SERPENT) ~ Sunrise (through the
first hump of the SERPENT) ~ Equinox Sunrise (through the middle hump) &
Winter Solstice Sunrise (last hump). (cf. p.10) Also, there are many Moon
coordinates embossed, which is illustrated on page 13. [[I think this is
pretty extraordinary for a snake 5000 years old.]] But this is just the
beginning of its "uniqueness."
I was particualrly impressed with the following cited information by Hamilton:
IS THIS A COINCIDENCE?
Leonardo Fibonacci ('discoverer' of the golden ratio of 1.6180339,) had 'his'
same golden ratio incorporated in the SERPENT MOUND. (p.49) BUT THAT'S NOT
ALL! On the top of the GREAT PYRAMID in Egypt, the height of the missing
so-called CAPSTONE = 31.6' ~ which is the same measurement as the SMALL
TRIANGLE figure at the head of the SERPENT in Ohio!?! (p.54) [[Although this
seems to be pointing to some type of CLUE as to the possible authorship of
the MOUND, nothing specifically is argued in the text that would solve this
problem at its root, with all the necessary details accompanying it; this also
will be addressed at the end commentary.]]
According to the author, both reflected the ancient science's secrets ~ the
transformation of matter into spiritual energy, where the
CIRCLE~SQUARE~TRIANGEL were used in connection with one another to DIVINE THE
approximation of the GOLDEN MEAN, i.e. 1.633 as comparedto 1.618. (p.57)
THE GREAT SERPENT ~ DEFINED!
(From page 151): "...like no other earthwork in existence...[where] even the
White Man, bent on covering or destroying anything in his path of
greed...could not consent to the obliteration of such a unique treasure."
[[THANK GOD1]] For in truth, the Great Serpent Mound is the mysterious
'THESAURUS'(implying THEO = 'god' plus SAURO = 'lizard' and literally
translated as TREASURE HOUSE (as paraphrased from the same page.)
THE DELPHIC ORACLE
[[I personally found this one of the most interesting sections of the book,
which centered around the dynamics of APOLLO~GAIA~& PYTHON.]] On page 109, Mr.
Hamilton suggests that Apollo was not a god invented to portray the sun as it
burns in the sky, for Helios more aptly represents that. Apollo represents the
'SOLAR MYSTERIES' ~ the mysteries associated with the soul and its
relationship with the Creator. Gaia represents the spiritual entity (the
shape of the Atom) as the mother-soul. The Python was the latent PRINCIPLE OF
SOUND hidden deep in the folds of her being. Hence the Python as WORDGIVER of
Gaia.
Later the Python was reflected in prophetic truths spoken by the Delphinian
Oracle, offering a valuable insight to the probability of a SOUND CURRENT ~
based system of divination dating from pre-history. The creation of the
Oracle of Delphi is, according to one way of considering it, the greatest of
myths, for it truly embodies the meaning of the term MYTHOS. (p.110)
[[Now these were Hamilton's words...NOTE: In THE AQUARIAN GOSPEL OF JESUS the
CHRIST, there is a section (Chapter 45) where Jesus was mentioned specifically
by the Oracle of Delphi as eclipsing this same oracle, since Jesus represented
the LIVING ORACLE! Verses 10 & 11 of Chapter 45 is presented as evidence:
"The gods will speak to man by man. The living Oracle now stands within these
sacred groves; the Logos from on high has come. From henceforth will decrease
my wisdom and my power; from henceforth will increase the wisdom and the power
of him, Immanuel."
I do not believe in coincidences, and I find it extremely interesting that it
was the Greek Master ~ Apollo ~ who brought Jesus into the presence of the
Oracle of Delphi!!! The eclipsing of the "old guard" with the "new hope for
the world" could have unwittingly been intended and ensconced in the SERPENT
imagery so many thousands of years ago, as the SERPENT appears to be in the
process of swallowing the OVAL (the SUN-god). Part of the Gnostic imagery
reveals the savior as the wise serpent....and the one who really taught Adam
& Eve the truth about the reality of things. I wonder aloud if Mr. Hamilton
was aware of Levi Dowling's book on THE AQUARIAN GOSPEL as the author penned
THE MYSTERY OF THE SERPENT MOUND (?)]]
THE MYSTERY COLLEGE
The author suggests that the EXPONENT of this college would include Pythagoras
of Crotona as well as Apollonius of Tyana [[note: root of 'python' &
'Apollo']] both revered sages of their respective ages. (p.110) Pythagoras'
penetration into Mysteries even inspired PLATO & (as sadly related by the
author,) it was Plato's incorporation of Spiritual Science that has caused
modern materialistic science [[THE KINGDOM OF MAN]] to ridicule his work.
[[Yes, this is certainly the kingdom of man in obtuse action as reaction to
spiritual truth, as in ~ THE DARKNESS GRASPED IT NOT of John's insightful
Gospel, where Jesus was the fullness of the LOGOS started & prepared long ago,
in my opinion...AND
A SPECIAL NOTE: Even THE NAG HAMMADI LIBRARY material incorporates the SNAKE
imagery as representing WISDOM, and one of the 52 tractates includes, 'PLATO,
REPUBLIC' which is a gnosticizing of a specific parable by Socrates, as
presented by his student Plato, as well as the ensuing Neo-Platonic school
which would try to keep this 'beacon of light' alive; certainly the Gnostics
were among those who saw the value of Plato's words.]]
THE AUTHOR'S THESIS in SHORT
The SERPENT preceded the philosopher - Pythagoras - but because of his
tireless work (the author suggests over lifetimes,) he becomes linked with it
and used it as a teaching tool subsequently. (p.112) The understanding of
Pythagorean connection is the linchpin in any proper future comprehension of
this mystery. [THE SERPENT MOUND] (p.113) The SERPENT MOUND was "an embodiment
of the spoken & written word in the form of a remarkable cyclopean creature
linking the human race to the esoteric SOUND PRINCIPLE, the WORD OF GOD.
(p.145)
[[As will be later commented on by me, these sacred principles were necessary
as a PRECURSOR to the fuller truth of the 'LIVING ORACLE' as cited before,
which
itself was "seen" through the Akashic Records by Levi Dowling. It found its
fullest expression, therefore, in Jesus the Christ!]]
OTHER PHILOSOPHICAL LINKS
QUOTE: WHEN ONE DARES TO SPEAK THE TRUTH, HE [[SHE]] MAKES MORE ENEMIES THAN
FRIENDS.
[[HOW TRUE!]]
Beginning with Pythagoras to Apollonius of Tyana, the founder of the
Neo-Platonic School, and working its way into the Essence Tradition who,
according to this author, were in "full command of scholarly pursuits of the
lost teachings of [Pythagoras]...and this same tradition made itself known in
the REVELATION writings [[specifically in THE BOOK OF REVELATION, the last
book of the Bible, and also known as THE APOCALYPSE.]] The author, whose book
is strewn with possible insightful references to this strange book, suggests
that the "later Nicene editors" thought its messages as "too difficult to be
applied in a practical sense for both themselves and the masses of the
faithful." [[There is a very interesting note - #96 on page 208 of the text
that explains [in part] the "Constantinian" posture (circa 324 C.E.) that
clearly shows how the official church (led by the Emperor Constantine - who as
the author notes, is not spiritually inclined,) let go of Messiah, and "the
beautiful life of the true messiah began to be forgotten, replaced with the
politics of murder & wholesale destruction..." [[It seems to be the 'FATE' of
the masses to be subjected to this false reality ~ until one extracts oneself
from the masses ~ and to really take the words of Jesus seriously: TO ASK~TO
SEEK~ TO KNOCK! This is the very purpose of critiquing works like what Mr.
Hamilton is presenting to us, the public mass of people.]]
RELIGION REARS ITS UGLY HEAD
And just to punctuate the previous point...Ross Hamilton makes repeated
references to the non-spiritual) Emperor Constantine & his church (THE ROMAN
CATHOLIC CHURCH,) which unfortunately lost the initiate mysticism after the
Council of Nicea (@ 325 C.E.); according to the author, they also lost the
correct comprehension of the entire Greek genius. [[One example of this would
be in THE FLOWER OF LIFE series of lectures by Drunvalo Melchizedek, he points
out the the Roman art was merely a copying of the masterful Greek art, and
therefore quite inferior to the Greek art, the latter of whom had understood
the intricacies of sacred geometry.]]
CONTINUING...(from note #96,) "the life and works of the messianic messenger
were struck out of the records...thus the beautiful life of the true messiah
began to be forgotten, replaced with the politics of murder and wholesale
destruction...[including] the intentional burning of libraries [especially] at
Alexandria, that housed an unknown number of works concerning the life of the
philosopher Apollo's, proving his impact on the culture."
[[I repeated this note with expansion IF ONLY BECAUSE it underscores another
travesty, THE REMOVING OF ANOTHER TRUTH, the truth of REINCARNATION, which
this same obtuse & unholy CONSTANTINE CHURCH was initially responsible for.]]
THE SERPENT: Bridging Religion & Mystery Schools
One of the key problems as exposed by Hamilton was to show that the New
Testament was intended for study by those accepted to the Mystery College of
the era. The Greeks were known for their popular mystery societies. Perhaps
a modern measure of receptivity to the apocalyptic writing is lost due to
almost a complete lack of traditional astronomical, numerical & geometrical
knowledge possessed by the average lay person. (p.104)
THUS
The OLD WORLD SERPENT became SATAN to the common understanding, i.e. through a
loss of knowledge concerning its creation and its affiliation. (105)
YET
The SERPENT ~ as umbilical chord ~ [[it even looks like one]] bridges the
difference between the divine world of archetypal images and the concrete
world of earthly measure, called geometry. (p.117)
THE COSMIC SERPENT
According to this author, the serpent is the symbol of both death and rebirth
whose breath emanates from the subtle & primal consciousness....It is the pen
of the Creator's measure & form. It is depicted as the WORD or LOGOS [[even
before the advent of the LIVING ORACLE.]] and as Hamilton points out, could
not be contained even within the 'vesica'; [[cf. text for visualization of the
SMALL TRIANGLE being outside of the sacred symbol. Only by reading the
complete text, can this concept be fully appreciated.]] The SERPENT swallows
the SUN (as the 676 of mercury is "controlling & taming the fiery influence
of the SUN ~ designated as 666.) [[Here we see an alchemy metaphor that I
could not help understanding as that which was being numerically reflected as
the "KINGDOM OF MAN"...where, as alluded to before, is being overshadowed by
THE KINGDOM OF GOD ~~ slowly!!! Whether Hamilton would see this metaphor as
reflecting this concept, I am not sure, but it certainly looked that way to me.
In any event, this alchemistic metaphor may speak volumes about the
metaphysical process - ongoing throughout the cosmos, and may even be a
template for this very concept!]]
THE BEAST & THE HUMAN FORM
The author's Python was designed to embody the GOLDEN RULE itself! (p.52) The
Phi ratio of the head of the serpent reflects the essentials of the universal
law in ancient architecture, i.e. dividing one number by the golden mean
(1.618, as mentioned before,) which will produce a specific ratio; [[cf. text
on page 52 for this significant illustration of a part of SACRED
GEOMETRY...embossed, perhaps, 5000 years ago on a plain in Ohio!]] This
"BEAST" ~ in the author's opinion ~ becomes a human being (Rev. 13:18, as
interpreted by the author,} and that God created the human form in his own
image - so the universe is shaped like the human body...where the soul entity
is likened to God, the little spirit being a drop in the ocean of the loving
Spirit. (p.69) [[Of course, this concept is not new to those who understand
Gnostic concepts, for it was reflected in "THE HYMN OF THE PEARL" as well as
the subject of John Davidson's book, THE ROBE OF GLORY.]]
THE SERPENT as SPIRITUAL SYMBOL
As an enduring mythological symbol, our GREAT SERPENT on the plains of Ohio
was, according to this author, intended as the STARTING POINT of a future work
for the human race in the slow reclaiming of our spiritual legacy and its
gradual return to the fountain head of truly cosmopolitan existence. The
GREAT SERPENT'S design is seen foremost as LOGOS~WORD~AUM~SABDA~MAZDA~et al,
but also as PRIMEVAL ONE, the holy instrument of the Invisible Creator, and
was intended to be WITNESSED - not worshipped - as such.
FEAR OF AUTHOR
FROM PAGE 142: "Without this process of consciously connecting ourselves to
the divine nature or source within, the human spirit falls beneath the feet of
external interest, blanketed into unconsciousness by the machinations of the
mind. The soul literally becomes a prisoner." [[I have seen reference to the
MIND as being equated with SATAN, as in MIND CONTROL! Please note.]]
FROM PAGE 146: "It's the loss of the sacred symbolism of the Serpent image in
Western culture that has made this understanding seem so abstract or
'foreign.' This coupled with a lack of guidance on the mystical, inner path of
Spiritual Science has put Western scholarship at odds with enlightened Eastern
thought. Virtually all masters of the various spiritual sciences, including
the yogis, have taken embodiment in the Mediterranean area and the Indian
subcontinent, including Tibet, for as my own Master has stated, the people of
those cultures require it. However, definite strides have been made in this
century to remedy the sad isolation of Western culture from its Eastern
counterparts, a first and much-needed step in bringing more and more
enlightened souls to the West and even Western embodiment." [[Hamilton does
not say who would be exactly doing this, but certainly Paramahansa Yogananda
had made a great candidate for same in the first part of the 20th century;
cf. AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A YOGI as one example of this process unfolding even
now.]]
FROM ALPHA to OMEGA
There is an interesting and intriguing parallel the author draws from the BOOK
OF REVELATION: It revolves around the FIVE angels...where the FOUR ANGELS as
indicated in REVELATIONS 7:1-3 were the four corners of the earth which were
influenced by the FIFTH ANGEL ( the POWER OF OMEGA) which "dictated to the
other four angels not to bring chaos into play (the active power of the
mind)...but rather The Son of God carries the feeling and force of the fifth
angel and commissioned to competently instruct the other souls who are called
JAVA, into the correct method of securing a place above the Creation of
Darkness, MAYA, the abode of Satan. (p.148) [[As is also indicated in this
important section of the book, this stabilization of the four winds is
accomplished by spiritually focusing the inner eye (the so-called third eye)
so that one can see through the lower ~ TO GO HIGHER! In so many words, this
is the
philosophy of the Eastern Masters, including Paramahansa Yogananda, through
the practice of Kriya Yoga.]]
[[FINAL COMMENTS by byron lebeau]]
Although Ross Hamilton never mentions the author Zecharia Sitchin, his work
may be germane to this critique...If the archeologist Putnam is proven correct
in his dating of the Ohio SERPENT MOUND to about 3000 B.C., then one must ask
oneself: did anything happen around that time frame that would be in accord
with the references as cited in this critique and reflected in Hamilton's
book? I would suggest, "Yes, possibly!"
In Sitchin's WHEN TIME BEGAN, he makes reference to an interesting 'divinity'
by the name of THOTH, son of Enki, (and who, as Sitchin notes,) may have been
the engineering brains behind the construction of the GREAT PYRAMID. Anyway,
on pages 196-197 of this paperback publication, the same THOTH (Egyptian god
Tehuti,) was described as "one who made calculations concerning the heavens,
the stars & the Earth"...AND as the "Reckoner of times & of seasons."
THOTH was also depicted with a symbol combining the Sun's disk & the Moon's
crescent upon his head [HMMMMMM !] one who "measured out the heavens & planned
the Earth." Tehuti means "HE WHO BALANCES." It was further suggested that
THOTH was "MASTER OF THE BALANCE" which suggested to two other scholars that
Sitchin cites in the text ~ as being nothing less than being associated with
the equinoxes ~ the time when the day and night were balanced. Furthermore,
the Greeks identified THOTH with the god HERMES, whom they considered to have
been the originator of astronomy & astrology, of the science of numbers & of
geometry, of medicine & botany. [[GEE, THOTH was the WHOLE PACKAGE!!!]]
Now THOTH, besides being the son of Sumerian god Enki, (Egyptian god Ptah,)
was also the brother of RA/MARDUK, who was himself convinced that his father
(Enki) was unjustly deprived of the Lordship of the Earth; if you consult one
of Sitchin's books, THE 12TH PLANET, most of this scenario is clearly
deliniated, how Enki & sons (THOTH & RA) were outmaneuvered by Enki's brother
Enlil and his progeny.
BUT NOW ~ as recorded in WHEN TIME BEGAN, RA decided to do battle with
Enlil's foremost son, Ninurta. In doing so, RA caused "not only conflicts
with the Enlilites, but also aroused the animosity of some of his own brothers
{like THOTH, for instance,) by involving them in the bitter
conflicts...[which] caused the death of a younger brother called Dumuzi, let
his brother Thoth reign & then forced him into exile...." (p.203)
EXILE! WHERE???
It seems to me that the exiled THOTH (also known as QUETZALCOATL,) who
possessed a talent RA was not given by Enki ~ the power to revive the dead,
and referred to as "Lord of the Artifact of Life" (p.205)...and therefore
would be the PERFECT SUSPECT for someone who could inscribe his signature into
the southern earth of the great and wonderful state of O-hi-O!!! After all,
he was in exile and known to have been in the AMERICAS about 5000 years ago;
if we just take Sitchin's EARTH CHRONICLES at face value (which I have no
trouble doing, especially if you assess the careful attention to detail that
was presented in both THE 12TH PLANET as well as THE WARS OF GODS & MEN) the
clues start mounting up mighty fast....
If we just considered the AWESOME TALENT that allegedly existed between ENKI &
HIS SON - THOTH, it should not be surprising to see elements of the PYRAMID &
STONEHENGE [I] embossed in the SERPENT MOUND, as Hamilton specifically pointed
out in his own book. After all, QUETZALCOATL means "FEATHERED SERPENT" [how
quaint] ~ or, in essence, a wise one who had knowledge of flight and the
heavens ~ who could single handedly incorporate the principles of sacred
geometry, astronomy, as well as the roots of a soon-to-bud- philosophy, that
later may have become the very foundation of THE LIVING ORACLE, HIMSELF! As
mentioned and cited before, this is one of the POTENTIAL implications of THE
AQUARIAN GOSPEL OF JESUS the CHRIST ~ in my humble opinion.
I realize that this possible truth may stick in the throats of some of the
viewers of this critique. SO BE IT! Although controversial, perhaps God may
work in more mysterious ways than has been dreamt of in our collective
philosophies. LET'S DEAL WITH IT! There is at least some tentative evidence
as presented in this critique that this is the case, and which is more
specifically provided in the aforementioned book by Ross Hamilton, to suggest
that the GREAT SERPENT MOUND may hold even more mysteries as we stare "goo-goo
eyed" with our collective faces at the SNAKE IN THE GRASS in O-hi-O.
This book, then, of Ross Hamilton, should, per force, become must reading -
FROM COVER TO COVER, which may uncover even more details upon further
scrutiny.
